Dorothy (Marek) Matthews

Dorothy (Marek) Matthews passed away at home, the morning of February 28th after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by her family.
She was reunited with her parents Steve and Susan Marek, her brother Paul and daughter Mary Ann Matthews.  She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother.
She is celebrated by her loving husband of 47 years, Wayne Matthews.  Her daughter Diane, son in-law Justin Ryan and their children Blake and Dillon.  Her son Chris, daughter in-law Shelley and their children Mitchell and Keegan.  Son Brian, daughter in-law Liz and their son George. Dorothy was born in 1945. She graduated from Johnson City High School and Broome Community College where she met her future husband Wayne in 1967. Dorothy enjoyed being a member of the Triple Cities Hiking Club, the Triple Cities Ski Club, working in her garden and walking with her husband.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family and baking for just about everyone she knew.  Dorothy is best known for seemingly eternal patience, her selfless manner and general kindness.  She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know her. Funeral services will be held Monday, 2:30 pm from the Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc. 96 Glenwood Ave. Binghamton, NY and at 3:00 pm at The Ascension Lutheran Church, 324 Clinton St. Binghamton, NY. Burial will follow in Slovak Lutheran Cemetery, Johnson City, NY with a dinner to follow. The family will receive friends at the Bednarsky Funeral Home  on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send baked goods to her husband. More appropriately, donations can be made to either Mom’s House, 770 Harry L. Drive, Johnson City, NY 13790 or The Ascension Lutheran Church.
