Martha T. Kokalas

On July 9, 2023, Martha T Kokalas, age 96, of Johnson City, peacefully went to join her mother and father in Heaven. Martha was predeceased by her mother and father, Martha and Gasper Kokalas; three brothers, Joseph, Edward and Edmond Kokalas; her nephew Joseph J Kokalas; and great nieces, Jennifer Ann Terry and Catherine Ann Vespucci. Martha was the last living family member of her generation. She is survived by her great niece and goddaughter, Mary M Shaffer-Sabine; nieces Carol J McMurray, Susan Terry, Ellen Whipple (Ron) and Kathy Rohlfs; nephew Edward Kokalas (Kathi).  Also survived by great nieces and nephews, Peggy Steber (Dave), Donna Cullins (Bryan), Kathy Terry, Amanda Carlin, Michael Terry (Kaho), Steven Whipple (Dena), Tim Whipple (Melissa), Eric Whipple (Shauna); and many great-great nieces and nephews. Martha was a lifelong resident of Johnson City.  She was a graduate of Johnson City High School and the Wilson School of Nursing, class of 1949. Martha spent forty years as a registered nurse at Wilson UHS Hospitals. She was a kind, caring nurse who had that special touch that helped people feel better. Martha was a long-time member of the Wilson Auxiliary and a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity. She loved her family, especially the children.  She was very kind and generous to her family and friends.  Martha loved to eat out with friends and family and entertain them in her home.  She was a huge supporter of animals and loved her three cats very much. The family would like to thank the staff at Vestal Park Memory Care Unit for their care and compassion during Martha's stay there. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mercy House or the local humane society. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 346 Prospect Street, Binghamton. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 AM followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Bednarsky Funeral Home Inc.
