Margaret "Peg" Ruth Johnston

Margaret "Peg" Johnston, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 13, 2023.  Peg Johnston, born Margaret Ruth, was the daughter of Robert Clark Johnston and Ruth Freeman Johnston. Peg was a life-long resident of Binghamton, NY. She was active in her community through many projects that included the Cooperative Gallery 213, founded in 2000, and more recently, the Department of Public Art Project that has contributed many murals to the Triple Cities. Peg was an abortion-rights and anti-violence activist. She was the Executive Director of the Southern Tier Women's Services in Vestal New York, former President of the Abortion Conversation Projects; founder and past president of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers. Johnston was also one of the founders of the Abortion Care Network and Board President from 2008-10. Her reach was far with colleagues and with women seeking support as they consider their reproductive choices. Peg is survived by her nephew, Ken Johnston; and niece, Susan Jenkins; and the women she loved and who loved her: Luba Djurdjinovic, Claudia Stallman and Laurie Ryan. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Atomic Tom's, 196 State St., Binghamton, NY 13901, followed by a reception at the Cooperative Gallery 213.  To request the livestream link for the services, please email coveneychristine@gmail.com. Parking is available in the State Street Parking ramp.
