John Choynowski Obituary

John William Choynowski, husband, father, grandfather, Vietnam Veteran, passed away after a 16-year courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his family on June 26, 2022. John was predeceased by his parents, Clem and Millie Choynowski; his brother Bob; and his brother-in-law, Charlie. John is survived by the love of his life, wife, and best friend Mary Choynowski, having been blessed with nearly 55 years of marriage. He is also survived by his son, John and his wife Carla: his daughter Jennifer: grandchildren, Nicole (Vivek), Joel (Katie), and Robert: sister-in-law, Nancy Choynowski; brother-in-law,  Mike Herrle and Linda; and sister- in-law, Rosetta Herrle. Also survived by nieces, Chris Choynowski and Lori McKenney (Mike); and nephew, Chuck Herrle; and his beloved chocolate lab, Snickers. John was a graduate of Binghamton North High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and served honorably in Vietnam. John worked for Fairbanks Valve, Anitec, and the Johnson City Central School District, retiring in 2009. John treasured his time with his family and did everything possible to make his family happy. He valued family vacations to the St. Lawrence, any beach, especially Myrtle, weekends at “the cottage” or just spending time together wherever the destination may be. He loved seeing his grandkids and teaching them the value of being a good person. John also valued his extended family. He developed many special friendships at the Church of the Holy Trinity where he served as an usher, member of the Holy Name Society, and was instrumental in many children’s Easter, Halloween and Christmas Parties. He never shied away from cooking for the parties, even as his health began to deteriorate. John also assisted in many Funeral Masses and whatever else the church needed help with. He and his wife Mary were honored to receive the Immaculata Award for all of the work they did for the church. He also had many friends at the Prospect Terrace Fire Company where he served as a volunteer fireman for many years. He never shied away from answering a call to working endless hours at the annual turkey raffle. The family would like to sincerely thank Doctor Y and the staff at Broome Oncology as well as Lourdes Hospice for their care and compassion during the past month, allowing John to pass at home. The family is especially grateful for his nurse Brittini, and aide Rose. Their care enabled John to be surrounding by family in his last days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Twin Tiers Honor Flight, The Church of the Holy Trinity or Prospect Terrace Fire Company. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 1st at the Church of the Holy Trinity 346 Prospect St, Binghamton, NY 13905 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, NY. The family will receive friends and family at church on Friday from 9:00 AM until time of Mass at 10:30 AM. Arrangements are by the Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc. 96 Glenwood Ave, Binghamton, NY.
