Welcome to the memorial page for

George Homanich

August 7, 2016
George Homanich, 68, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 7th, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  His wife and daughter were by his side. George is survived by his wife of 34 years, Judy Homanich; his daughter, Sarah Homanich; his faithful dog Grumpy; and his brothers, James, Peter and Michael Homanich. He was predeceased by his parents, George Homanich and Erdella Vail; and his beloved son, David Homanich. George’s quiet strength and deep faith were evident in his life — personal and professional — which was devoted to improving the lives of others and making the world a better, more just and peaceful place.  He was an employee of New York State for over 30 years, working as a social worker in Adult Protective Services, the Binghamton Psychiatric Center and as shared staff at Catholic Charities as an Intensive Case Manager. George put his faith into action, speaking out and acting out against injustice which resulted in numerous arrests and some time in jail for causes such as drones, Guantanamo and Chelsea Manning. He was a member of Broome County Peace Action, Upstate Drone Action, Upper New York United Methodist Task Force for Palestine-Israel, Broome County Council of Churches Peace with Justice Committee, and Labor-Religion Coalition as well as many local, national and international peace and social justice organizations. He was also a much-loved member of Beloved Community. Besides spending time with his family, George enjoyed running, working out in the gym, working in his garden, listening to jazz, watching Law and Order (all versions including UK), eating dark chocolate, and especially drinking coffee. He also took great pleasure in being, in his words, “a smart ass.” A Celebration of Life service will be held A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday,  September 17, 2016, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 83 Main St., Binghamton, NY. at Tabernacle United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Catholic Charities Food Bank, 100 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13905 — where George volunteered — would be appreciated. Heartfelt thanks to all who took such compassionate care of George, who lovingly supported George and his family, and especially all those who prayed. Arrangements by Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc.
