Edith (Barth) Epstein, age 93, died on May 14, 2015 at Good Shepherd-Fairview Home. She had resided at 5 Riverside Towers since 2005, where she made many friends. A native of Paterson, New Jersey, she and her husband Joe moved to Philadelphia after WWII, where he worked as an engineer and she as a home-maker and community leader. She was a Past President of the Auxiliary of the Drizen-Weiss Post of the Jewish War Veterans. As President of the Upper Northwood Community Council in the northeast section of Philadelphia, she successfully "fought City Hall" to bring the Tarken Ice Skating Rink to that area. Families and children have enjoyed it now for a half century.  Throughout her life, Edie insisted upon and shared the proper use of English language and grammar. She was famous for her long letters to her sisters, children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces, as well as for her colorful loving notecards to their children.  She was a dependable reference regarding Rules of Order at meetings. She appreciated and collected fine china and glass, as well as recipes. She and Joe in particular enjoyed travel to our National Parks. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Mark and Debby Epstein, locally, and Alvin and Susan Epstein, of E. Norwalk, CT.; her grandchildren (and spouses), Gillian (Nate) Baudo, Samara (Eric) Karasyk, Leah Epstein, Aaron (Julia) Epstein and Ari (Rima) Epstein; her great-grandchildren, who were her special joy, Rachel and Eli Baudo, Miles and Jordan Karasyk, Micah Epstein, and Tullia Epstein. Also survived by her sisters, Gertrude Wasserstrum and Caroline Abramson. The family wishes to thank Edith's caregivers, Betty McPeek, Rosann Backus, and Kristi Alcantara for the loving care provided to her in her own home through difficult times. Also, thanks are due to Stephen Paushter, MD, for his kind care over the past decade.  The family requests that contributions in her memory be given to a charity of the donor's choice. The funeral and interment will be held in New Jersey. Shiva will be observed at the home of Dr. Epstein Wednesday May 20, 2015, from 6 to 9 pm.
