David J. Hmurcik, 66, son of Albert and Irene Hmurcik, died peacefully on Sunday, March 13, 2022, with Gary, Sara Fae and Chandler at his side. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gary & Sara Fae Bastian-Hmurcik; his nephew, Chandler Hmurcik; the 'cousins club' (of which he was a founding member) which included Karen Snupik, Linda Snupik and honorary members, Diane Snupik, Mimi Ampula and Tom Ampula; (we're still wondering where all the money went) and his 'adopted' brother, Dr. Michael Barrett; and his 'adopted' sister, Gina Guthrie. David was nominated for Boys State, Mensa and West Point Military Academy. David earned a BA with honors from Binghamton University (BU) in History and Political Science, MBA and MIS from BU and attended University of Buffalo Law School and PSU main campus. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity and was employed at Singer-Link Corp. and BU bookstore. David loved to read and take care of family. He was always available to help an aunt, uncle or cousin as well as his brother. His goal in life was to take care of family and make their lives easier. His greatest love was his nephew Chandler who he spent countless hours with over the years. David loved military history, including his own family history, and he worked hard to discover and preserve the memory of John Hmurcik, Jr. and Dorothy Anthony. As part of military history David was born exactly 90 years after the end of the Civil War at Appomattox. David loved sports and a special thank you to John Skiba, Jr., Rick Norbont and Rick Kumpon as part of the First Ward ghetto gang. I can speak to the fact that my brother was the toughest person I have ever met, yet he was the kindest, nicest and most loving person I have ever known. David was given 6 months to live in November 2012, but with his will to live, the need to take care of our parents, and help from Dr. Barrett and Dr. Patey of Sloan-Kettering, he was able to take care of both of them until their passing. Our dad Albert died July 25, 2021 and was able to stay in the same house where he was born because of my brother. My last words to him were job well done and it’s time to go home and see mom and dad. I could not have asked for a better brother than David J. Hmurcik. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 12:30 PM on Friday, March 18, 2022 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 346 Prospect St., Binghamton. Family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 noon until the time of the Mass at 12:30 PM. Burial will be with his parents in Slovak Catholic Cemetery later in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to Holy Trinity Church or the Hospice Program at Lourdes Hospital. Arrangements by Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc.
