Ada Norma Reed Stallman, 91, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on April 15, 2015, after a short illness. Ada was born February 18th 1924 in Kalamazoo, MI to Lottie and George A. Reed. She was pre-deceased by her son, Adam; her husband, Daniel; her brother, Frederick and her sister, Helen. She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Claudia; daughter-in-law, Christine Coveney, and their children, Benjamin and Noemi. She is also survived by her stepson, Richard; her cousin Prudence Warner; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Ada had many devoted friends, special among them, Mark Roth, Peg Johnston, Shirley Ernst, Roadena Marley, Dorothy Pita and Lois Ellis. Ada had a long and productive life as an artist. She studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and under Henry Hensche in Provincetown, and more recently with Carl Ashby and Henry Pearson in New York. She accompanied her first husband George Morrison, the Native American painter, on a Fulbright Scholarship to France in the 1950’s. She worked as a fashion illustrator in New York where she met and married Daniel J. Stallman, a businessman in the garment industry. She was accomplished in illustration, batik and watercolor. She moved to Binghamton from New York in 1998 and became a treasured member of the Cooperative Gallery. Ada developed a distinctive style of impressionistic collage and her work is in the permanent collection of the Broome County Library. She continued to create her joyful art until her death. Her art and life have been an inspiration to artists, acquaintances and friends. The family wishes to acknowledge the devotion and compassion of Carole Kelly, Dee Dixon, and the staff at Good Shepherd Village where she spent her last year and a half. Calling hours at 8:30 am and a service at 9:30 am will take place at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Drive, Binghamton on Sunday April 19th, with Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell officiating. Graveside service and burial will be at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Queens later that day. The family will be sitting shiva at Claudia and Chris’ home Monday and Tuesday from 5:00-7:30 pm with shiva services at 6:30. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Ada’s memory be made to Temple Concord or the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Bednarsky Funeral Home.
