William A. Mankus

William ("Bill") Algirdas Mankus unexpectedly passed away on July 19, 2017.  Bill is survived by his loving parents, John and Grace Mankus; brother John V. (Deborah) Mankus of Mooresville, NC; brother James K. Mankus of Hoover,AL; and sister, Mary K. Mankus of Rydal, PA; beloved nieces and nephews: Madeline and Bradley Mankus, Bailey Mankus; and Lily and Finian Willis; uncles and aunts: Robert and Barbara Moughan; William and Lila Moughan; Joseph and Carole Mankus; and Anthony and Jane Mankus; and many cousins.  BilI is predeceased by his grandparents, Jonas and Joana Mankus; and William and Eva Moughan; and his aunt, Mary Moughan.  Bill graduated from Union Endicott High School, where he was a skilled and gifted athlete, who enjoyed great success on the soccer field.  Bill continued his achievements in the sport, playing soccer for the University of Scranton on an athletic scholarship.  Upon returning to Endicott, Bill received an A.S. from Broome Community College, and continued his studies at Binghamton University.  Bill was currently employed by Broome County. Bill’s smart, ingenious and cunning sense of humor, along with his quick wit, could disarm anyone, and made him a fast friend to many.  Spending time with Bill was always enjoyable, as he could easily have you laughing in minutes.  Bill’s humor, coupled with his authenticity, genuine friendliness and easy manner, explain his abundance of friends.  Bill will be remembered for these and so many of his outstanding attributes, including his selflessness, inherent kindness, generosity and loyalty.  Bill’s loyalty knew no bounds, and if needed, Bill was not only there to lend support, but also to fiercely protect and defend.  Bill never failed to offer valid and unique perspectives with his astute observations, thoughtful opinions, clever suggestions and sage advice. Bill’s vast intellect and depth of knowledge on a wide range of topics did not go unnoticed.  While Bill could speak effortlessly about sports and currents events, he could just as easily adeptly converse on topics such as politics, domestic affairs and international relations.  Because of this, Bill was a master at trivia and had a fondness for debating.  Bill loved a good debate, particularly with his most formidable “opponent,” our mother. The love and respect Bill’s family and friends had for him is immeasurable.  Bill’s passing is a profound loss.  He was a truly wonderful person who will be missed tremendously. Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Bednarsky Funeral Home, Binghamton.  At 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, there will be a prayer service at the funeral home, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Endicott.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Bill’s name to Mercy House, 212 North McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760 or to a charity of your choice.
