Welcome to the memorial page for

Helena (Chatrnuch) Hornick

July 10, 2017
Helen F. (Chatrnuch) Hornick, an angel that walked the earth, went to be with Jesus on July 10, 2017 at the age of 95, with her family at her bedside.    Helen adored her children and grandchildren, enjoyed card games of all kinds, was an avid reader, and loved her two cats (both of which were named Cindy). She was never one to complain about pain, and instead focused on those around her that she loved; cooking and baking, offering wonderful and traditional Slavic food. A great wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend; she will be greatly missed.   Helen remained full of energy, enthusiasm and focus while living independently right up until her sudden passing. She was a registered nurse and graduate of Binghamton General Hospital School of Nursing.  While raising her 7 children, she also worked in the family business, Van Horn Jewelers.  Helen managed the costume jewelry department, where she established the iconic “grab bag” concept.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Hornick; son,  Richard Hornick; parents,  Frank and Gizella Chatrnuch;  and sisters, Ann M. Bednarsky, and Margaret Dahulick. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law,  Joy & Robert Crowe, Golden, CO;  5 sons and daughters-in-law,  Robert & Mary Anne, Owego, NY; John (Skip) & Jill, Candor, NY; Jeff & Michelle, San Diego, CA; Randall & Vandana, Greenwich, CT;  and Ronald & Charmaine, Las Vegas, NV; 16 grand-children:  Stacey Hornick Dodge (Mike), Tami Sanders (Jason), and Korilynn Orth (Dan), Jason Sollowin, Jonathan (Jacqueline), and Jeffery (Nicole) Crowe, Madison, Javan, Braelyn Hornick, Danika, Kyle, and Kayla Hornick, Alexandra and Andie Hornick, Chariane Forrey (Matt), Reece Hornick;  one sister and brother-in-law,  Terry & Al Petranick, Omaha, NE.;  and multiple nieces and nephews. She was a great servant of God and a member of St. John’s Church, Newark Valley. She will always be looking out for her family. Rest in peace Mom - thank you God for the time you gave us with such an angel. A Mass to celebrate Helen’s life will be offered at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 24, 2017, at St. John’s Church, Newark Valley, NY.  Family will receive friends at the church from 10:00AM until the time of the Mass at 11:00AM.  Inurnment will follow at Slovak Catholic Cemetery.  Funeral arrangements are by Bednarsky Funeral Home Inc.   In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Tioga County Rural Ministry, Food for the Poor or St. Joseph’s Indian School.
